Why should I care about Web 2.0?
There are various reasons why a charity or social enterprise may want to get involved in Web 2.0:
- To increase the number of supporters for your organisation
- To reach new audiences. For example, Web 2.0 technologies such as YouTube and Bebo are great for reaching out to young people.
- To leverage the enthusiasm that supporters have for your cause. People who support charities are often passionate about the cause and can be your best advocates.
- It doesn't cost much. At least in terms of money, although it can be time consuming . If your time is limited see if you can find a volunteer or intern to help out.
- To make your cause more interesting and engaging. For example, a video featuring the people or animals you help, or an honest blog written by someone experiencing the issue you focus on, can help you get people excited about your work.
- Showing transparency. People are increasingly suspicious of charities and where their money is going. Web 2.0 allows you to provide information about what you do, how the money is spent and allows people to connect with the individuals or animals you have helped, building trust.
